Afternoons of Solitude

This film will be followed by a 20 minute Q&A
Andrés Roca Rey, clad in glittering gold brocade, is the high priest of bullfighting. In this documentary, Albert Serra, with his frequent collaborator, DOP Artur Tort, follows this Peruvian bullfighter for 3 years and 14 corridas. The juxtaposition of pageantry with gore is simultaneously satisfying and jarring, as Tort’s camera closes in to capture the bull and its fighter as if they were dancers. Serra is interested in the solitude of both the human and the animal, the almost sacred sublimity of the violence involved, and the ecocritical morality of the sport. This film premiered at San Sebastián and won the Golden Shell.
