The Absent
Dan Lu
This is the chronicle of a hometown, a chronicle of seeking and returning. When Ivan, an introverted Russian photographer comes back to his hometown of Tacheng in Xinjiang, he checks into an old-fashioned hotel and meets the owner, Refati, a Tatar accordionist and Xiaoyu, the lodger next door. These brief and unexpected companions get stuck together during a blizzard and become vessels of wisdom to each other. Lu's film is a very personal work, based on her own experiences, and in more ways than one, is her own vessel of wisdom. In a white landscape of freezing cold, arcs of growth intertwine, and people melt into their truest and most vulnerable selves.
