Volta Awards: Ed Harris
Our Volta Awards honour outstanding contributions to the art of filmmaking. Named after Ireland's first dedicated cinema, the Volta Picture Theatre, founded by James Joyce, this prestigious accolade celebrates those whose work has captivated audiences and left a lasting legacy in the global film industry. Previous recipients include Danny DeVito, Steve McQueen, Julie Andrews and Kenneth Branagh.
This year's Volta Awards will be presented to Jessica Lange and Ed Harris. Both Volta presentations will be public events and include career retrospective and conversation with the recipients. Ed Harris is a celebrated actor and filmmaker with a career spanning five decades. A four-time Academy Award nominee and two-time Golden Globe winner, Harris is renowned for standout performances in The Hours (2002), The Truman Show (1998), Apollo 13 (1995), Pollock (2000), and HBO's Game Change and Empire Falls. Harris has worked with acclaimed directors, including James Cameron (The Abyss), Oliver Stone (Nixon), Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind), Bong Joon-ho (Snowpiercer), and Darren Aronofsky (Mother!). Recent highlights include Top Gun: Maverick (2022) and Maggie Gyllenhaal's The Lost Daughter (2021). As a director, Harris earned critical acclaim with Pollock and Appaloosa (2008). He will next direct The Ploughmen, a neonoir crime thriller based on Kim Zupan's novel, starring Nick Nolte and Bill Murray. Upcoming projects include Ben Stiller's comedy The Dink, and the A24 thriller Huntington.
On television, Harris captivated audiences as the enigmatic 'Man in Black' in HBO's Westworld, earning him an Emmy nomination. He recently starred in Aaron Sorkin's To Kill a Mockingbird on Broadway and made his West End debut in Buried Child, earning an Olivier nomination. With his diverse body of work and unparalleled talent, Ed Harris remains a powerful force in cinema and theatre.
